He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (2This was the Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was ill.) 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, saying, \u201cLord, the one whom you love is ill.\u201d 4When he heard this, Jesus said, \u201cThis illness isn\u2019t fatal. It\u2019s for the glory of God so that God\u2019s Son can be glorified through it.\u201d 5Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. 6When he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was. After two days, 7he said to his disciples, \u201cLet\u2019s return to Judea again.\u201d 8The disciples replied, \u201cRabbi, the Jewish opposition wants to stone you, but you want to go back?\u201d 9Jesus answered, \u201cAren\u2019t there twelve hours in the day? Whoever walks in the day doesn\u2019t stumble because they see the light of the world. 10But whoever walks in the night does stumble because the light isn\u2019t in them.\u201d 11He continued, \u201cOur friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I am going in order to wake him up.\u201d 12The disciples said, \u201cLord, if he\u2019s sleeping, he will get well.\u201d 13They thought Jesus meant that Lazarus was in a deep sleep, but Jesus had spoken about Lazarus\u2019 death. 14Jesus told them plainly, \u201cLazarus has died. 15For your sakes, I\u2019m glad I wasn\u2019t there so that you can believe. Let\u2019s go to him.\u201d 16Then Thomas (the one called Didymus) said to the other disciples, \u201cLet us go too so that we may die with Jesus.\u201d John 15:15 I don\u2019t call you servants any longer, because servants don\u2019t know what their master is doing.
