How can you say that we will be set free?\u201d 34Jesus answered, \u201cI assure you that everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35A slave isn\u2019t a permanent member of the household, but a son is. 36Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you really will be free. 37I know that you are Abraham\u2019s children, yet you want to kill me because you don\u2019t welcome my teaching. 38I\u2019m telling you what I\u2019ve seen when I am with the Father, but you are doing what you\u2019ve heard from your father.\u201d 39They replied, \u201cOur father is Abraham.\u201d Jesus responded, \u201cIf you were Abraham\u2019s children, you would do Abraham\u2019s works. 40Instead, you want to kill me, though I am the one who has spoken the truth I heard from God. Abraham didn\u2019t do this. 41You are doing your father\u2019s works.\u201d They said, \u201cOur ancestry isn\u2019t in question! The only Father we have is God!\u201d 42Jesus replied, \u201cIf God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God. Here I am. I haven\u2019t come on my own. God sent me. 43Why don\u2019t you understand what I\u2019m saying? It\u2019s because you can\u2019t really hear my words. 44Your father is the devil. You are his children, and you want to do what your father wants. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has never stood for the truth, because there\u2019s no truth in him. Whenever that liar speaks, he speaks according to his own nature, because he\u2019s a liar and the father of liars. 45Because I speak the truth, you don\u2019t believe me. 46Who among you can show I\u2019m guilty of sin? Since I speak the truth, why don\u2019t you believe me? 47God\u2019s children listen to God\u2019s words. You don\u2019t listen to me because you aren\u2019t God\u2019s children.\u201d 48The Jewish opposition answered, \u201cWe were right to say that you are a Samaritan and have a demon, weren\u2019t we?\u201d 49\u201cI don\u2019t have a demon,\u201d Jesus replied. \u201cBut I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50I\u2019m not trying to bring glory to myself.
